Empatika · Cognitive museography

A Dominican museum consultancy asked for a name and a logo. What it was missing was ground of its own, so instead of naming a company we named a discipline.

The real problem

In the museum market everyone introduces themselves with the same words.

When a museum director asks three suppliers for a quote, all three say they do exhibition design and all three show the same list of services. Competing inside that category means competing on price, and no young consultancy wins that ground. The brief was a name and an identity. The problem sat one step earlier: there was nowhere to place this company that was not already taken. The way out was not to stand out within the category but to name a different one. It existed in the academic literature, it described exactly what they do, and no consultancy in the Caribbean was claiming it: cognitive museography. Not designing exhibitions, designing how they are understood.

What we built
01

The name

Empatika is empathy with a K. Short, pronounced the same in Spanish and in English, with the domain free and no inherited baggage from a design studio or an agency. The K is not a graphic whim: it is where the scene is going to happen.

02

The symbol was already inside

No icon was placed next to the word. It was found within it, between the i and the k: a dot for a head, a stem for a body, and the k's diagonal is the arm of one over the other's shoulder. That gesture is the whole job, adapting what you say to whoever is receiving it, and that is what takes empathy. The symbol can be cut out and still works on its own, because it was never an ornament added on top.

03

Colour as a journey

A single gradient crosses the word from left to right, from warm orange to cool turquoise. It is literally what the consultancy sells: the visitor arrives feeling and leaves understanding. The brand does not explain that journey, it performs it.

04

The category as a position

Cognitive Museography is not a tagline under the logo: it is half of the trading name. By naming the discipline, the company stops being one more supplier on a list and becomes the reference of a field. Everything else was built to hold that claim up in front of a museum director with no patience for jargon.
